Recently a new local group, Superior Webbs, released their debut mixtape “Blue Jeans and Nikes.” Consisting of 17 songs, the mixtape features original beats from one of their members, Too Shade. With an original sound and creative lyrics Superior Webbs brings a new side to the Madison’s local hip hop scene. Besides self produced beats their mixtape includes a remix to “A million and One Questions” by Jay Z, “Finally Moving” produced by Pretty Lights and “Uncommonly Cold” produced by Joe Dean. As a local group it is important to understand where the artists grew up. The following paragraphs give a short bio on the two artists and their background.
Superior Webbs consists of two mc’s, Cody Banks, aka Too Shade, and Tyler Olson, aka TO. Their collaboration began when the two both set out to the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee. Too Shade, a Westside Madison, WI resident and James Madison Memorial grad began writing raps and producing beats in middle school and released his first solo mixtape “Purple Drank and Oreos” his senior year at Memorial. Producing many of the beats heard on both his solo mixtape and even more frequently in his collaboration with TO, his true talents are seen in both his lyricism and his ability to produce quality music.
TO got his start in high school as he was featured in several collaborations with other local mc’s however “Blue Jeans and Nikes” is his debut mixtape. With a very distinct style as well as creative lyrics TO brings an aspect to the music that is both original and refreshing. Superior Webbs has already created a following between fellow students at UW-Milwaukee, many at the University of Minnesota as well as a Madison following. Local artists such as Jo Flowroshus and K Flava have also shown their support of the debut mixtape, “Blue Jeans and Nikes.” Superior Webbs music can be found on their self-titled facebook page as well as on purevolume.com. Currently their mixtape can be downloaded for free on limelinx.com. Check it out and support local hip hop!
